Possible causes
Infection of the ear canal or middle ear, trapped wax, eustachian tube blockage after a cold, and injury are typical causes. The eardrum has to be seen before the cause is settled.
How this is assessed
The ear is examined with a light or microscope. Wax may be removed if it hides the eardrum. Hearing or balance tests are arranged only when they would change treatment.

- Cleaning and medical treatment for infection
- Advice when the problem should settle after a cold
- Further ENT treatment or surgery if the eardrum or repeated infections require it
