The immune system reacts to allergens in the air. A structural problem such as a deviated septum can add to the blockage and is looked for separately.

The history often suggests allergy. The nose is examined so infection, sinus disease and septal deviation are not missed. Skin-prick testing is not offered as a listed service here.

- Allergen advice and medical treatment for the lining of the nose
- Treatment of sinusitis if it is also present
- Discussion of septal surgery only if a structural blockage is part of the problem
