Snoring and sleep-related breathing

Snoring is noisy breathing in sleep. It does not always mean obstructive sleep apnea. Apnea is suspected when breathing pauses, choking, unrefreshing sleep or daytime sleepiness are also present. ENT assessment looks for a blockage in the nose, tonsils or adenoids that can be treated.

Why people come in

  • Loud snoring
  • Pauses in breathing reported by a partner or parent
  • Morning headache or unrefreshing sleep
  • A child who snores and mouth-breathes

Possible causes

Nasal blockage, a heavy soft palate, large tonsils or adenoids, and weight can all contribute. More than one factor is common.

How this is assessed

The airway is examined. A sleep study is the way to confirm apnea in adults when the history suggests it. Not every snorer needs a study or an operation.

Treatment options

  • Treatment of nasal allergy or septal blockage when that is the driver
  • Tonsil or adenoid surgery in selected children
  • Advice to confirm apnea properly before any sleep surgery in adults

Diagnosis and treatment depend on an individual consultation. A page cannot decide that you need a procedure.
