Possible causes
Viral infection, tonsil infection, voice strain, acid reflux and, less commonly, a growth on the vocal cord. Smoking history matters and should be shared honestly.
How this is assessed
The throat is examined. A thin endoscope through the nose may be used to see the voice box. That is explained before it is done.
Treatment options
- Medical treatment and voice rest when the cords are inflamed
- Treatment of tonsil infection when that is the source
- Further investigation if hoarseness does not settle
