Tonsils and adenoids

Tonsils and adenoids help fight infection in childhood. They cause trouble when infections are very frequent, or when they block breathing and contribute to snoring or ear problems. Removal is not the first step for a single sore throat.

Why people come in

  • Repeated tonsil infections
  • Mouth breathing or snoring in a child
  • Disturbed sleep or pauses in breathing
  • Ear infections alongside nasal blockage

Possible causes

Ordinary viral throats are common. Enlarged adenoids can block the back of the nose in children. The decision for surgery depends on how often infections occur and how much breathing is affected.

How this is assessed

The throat, nose and ears are examined. Parents are asked about sleep, mouth breathing and school absence. Not every enlarged tonsil needs an operation.

Treatment options

  • Treatment of the current infection
  • Watchful care when episodes are infrequent
  • Surgery when infections or blockage meet a clear clinical reason

Diagnosis and treatment depend on an individual consultation. A page cannot decide that you need a procedure.

When to seek urgent care

  • A child struggling to breathe or unable to swallow fluids
